Australian Open 2024

Batman Avenue,

Melbourne VIC 3000

Grand Slam Tennis Event at Melbourne Park

The Australian Open has done access and inclusion so well I’m already giving them an A+ for access. Instead of a full review, here’s a snapshot of my experience.

I’d recommend downloading the AO app, all the information you need and answers to your questions you’ll find here. The accessibility and sensory maps are super helpful to locate the accessible toilets and the accessible routes around the venue. Most routes are pretty busy, however the path around the back of Rod Laver and Margaret Court called AO River Terrace is definitely quieter with less foot traffic.

The inclusion team has an information booth as you enter at Grand Slam Oval, you won’t miss it. They provide accessibility info and assistance for those with access needs. You can pick up a hard copy of a map here. The team work alongside Travellers Aid who can help those that require assistance with entry and exit and wheelchair rentals.

All the toilets I went to were great, however like most public events, there’s no way of policing who uses the accessible ones. Accessible toilets are all gendered and there’s 2 changing place toilets - I easily found the one in John Cain Arena.

Can’t fault the Accessible seating in the ticketed arenas. If you’ve been to Rod Laver before you’ll know there’s sections at the back at concourse level to sit. They have carer/companion chairs that can be picked up and moved where needed. Staff are wonderful at clearing pathways and showing you to your seats. I went to Show Court 3, an outside court that has 2 accessible bays. It’s not ticketed so it’s a first come first serve basis. I was able to get a spot front and centre but there were no companion seats left so my sister had to sit on the ground next to me until one became available.

There’s a lot more seating options this year at the back of Garden Square. I like it better here compared to Grand Slam Oval. I find it more accessible under foot and there’s not as many people. Bonus that this year there’s a Lygon St pop up of Italian food.

If you’re planning to go this week, visit the website or download the app beforehand. It’s such a fun event, you definitely don’t need to be into tennis to enjoy it!
