Chinese Dining Experience

Yum Cha: 11am-3pm (weekends 10:30am)

Dinner: 5:30pm-10pm

I’ve been on the hunt for an accessible yum cha spot in Chinatown, and I thought I’d finally found one at Secret Kitchen.

Let’s start with the entrance on Exhibition Street is wide and step free. Things were looking promising.

Inside, it was packed for Friday yum cha, and I was seated at a table for two. While it felt tight moving past the tables, the space does open up toward the back with lots of round tables, giving more room to breathe.

Now, let’s talk about the accessible toilet. It’s upstairs, and the only way to reach it is via a lift - through the kitchen. Not ideal! The path is narrow, with trolleys in the way, making it a bit of a squeeze. If you have a wider chair or power chair I don’t think it would be possible. Once you’re on level 1, though, the toilet itself is great. It’s just a shame that getting there is not very accessible.

Theres quite a few accessible parking spots in the area, I counted 6. The nearest is on Exhibition Street. There’s metered street parking on Little Bourke Street as well that I found suitable.

It certainly was frustrating when you’ve come expecting a more accessible experience. My search for a traditional yum cha in Chinatown that ticks all my boxes continues!
