If you’re after a unique cafe with plenty of open-air space and outdoor seating, @_rudimentary_ in Footscray ticks all the boxes! It’s been a local favourite for nearly a decade, and I can confirm it’s still as good as ever.

Entry is via Leeds Street through the side gate. The path is step free, though there are some pavers with loose gravel at the front - just something to be mindful of as it can be a little unstable underfoot.

This cafe is cleverly built from a shipping container, set in a corner spot with a gorgeous garden wrapping around it. The outdoor area is a real highlight, with plenty of grass and flat, open space - ideal for a sunny day! I sat inside, where they leave the large container doors open in nice weather, letting in loads of light and fresh air. Seating is all standard height, though the indoor chairs are swivels - I swapped mine for a regular outdoor chair without any fuss. Even with the container’s compact size, the layout is spacious enough to navigate on a scooter.

Down the back, there’s an accessible toilet - great to have in a small space, but a little cramped due to lockers being stored inside.

Like most of Footscray, parking can be tricky! There’s two accessible spots nearby on Ryan and Leeds Street that were both unavailable when I visited. I had to do a few laps before finding a two hour street park that worked.

Next time, I’ll be grabbing a spot in the garden! With plenty of gluten-free options and fantastic coffee, Rudimentary is definitely a place I’ll come back to again. Get down while the sun’s still shining
